It was a duo show with Michiyo Kitaoka (pictured left), who is the daughter of my mentor, Shozo Kitaoka.

01. Introducing New Works
Art Fair Tokyo 2026, Box, choshitsu, butterfly shape, “Ephemeral Song” by Kaori Sugano. Using the traditional Choshitsu technique known as Tsuishu (layered red lacquer), I embedded natural pearls to express a sense of freshness within the profound weight of the lacquer.

Art Fair Tokyo 2026, Box, choshitsu, butterfly shape, “Vetch” by Kaori Sugano. Over layers of green colored lacquer, I applied deep navy lacquer and carved the design of common vetch. The delicate flowers are rendered in Raden (mother-of-pearl inlay).

Originally created in 2007, I have renewed the side designs for this exhibition, reimagining the piece through my current creative lens.

02. Accessories that Brought New Connections

Pieces to Wear - A Nostalgic Garden

Art Fair Tokyo 2026, Raden brooches, obi-dome (sash clips), and earrings by Kaori Sugano.

The Nostalgic Garden series—my first collection of Raden brooches, obi-dome (sash clips), and earrings brought me wonderful connections far beyond my expectations.

On the first day, the renowned art collector Ms. Hiroko Ishinabe purchased two obi-dome featuring pine and camellia motifs. To my delight, she returned the following day wearing a stunning kimono and obi ensemble coordinated specifically with the pine obi-dome. I have already had the privilege of visiting her home, and I look forward to our future friendship.

Furthermore, representatives from Gallery Morgenrot in Minami-Aoyama and the Shinjuku Takashimaya Art Gallery also selected my accessories, leading to confirmed future exhibitions at both venues.

The exhibition at Morgenrot is scheduled as a three-person lacquer show in January 2027. At Shinjuku Takashimaya, my work will be featured in the showcase in front of the gallery for about a month (dates to be announced).
Additionally, I am preparing to launch my own self-managed online store this May. I am working hard to ensure that the Raden accessories and lacquerware pieces debuted here can be delivered directly from my hands to yours.

I initially began making accessories with the lighthearted wish to "create things I would want to wear myself." However, once I started, I was moved to tears by the difficulty of handling the shells, resulting in a mountain of failed attempts. Seeing these hard-won pieces forge such rich connections now, I feel from the bottom of my heart that I am glad I did not give up.

In Part II, I will introduce my panels, vessels, and small objects.
